Shearer cultivating winning culture

It might be something of an understatement to say that Patrick Shearer and the Frankford Huskies dealt with obstacles throughout their inaugural season in the Provincial Junior Hockey League.

Despite ending their debut campaign in 2021-22 with just one win, Shearer recognized the potential of the organization and began turning the Huskies into contenders.

This season, the franchise secured the Tod Division Regular Season title, marking one of the most impressive turnarounds in junior hockey.

Under his leadership, the Huskies have established a winning culture, resulting in several honours, including Shearer earning PJHL Coach of the Year.

"It's been a challenge, but it's been rewarding," Shearer said. "Ultimately, this year was a huge step forward for us. We won the division, but now our goal is to win a Schmalz Cup, and I think we've put ourselves in a position where that becomes realistic."

A significant factor in their recent achievements has been their approach to roster management, involving General Manager Ian Green and Director of Hockey Operations Frank Robinson.

"We're doing a good job of recruiting, bringing in high-end talent, and providing them with an environment where they can succeed," Shearer said. "It shows that we're doing the right things as an organization."

Shearer emphasized the importance of local community support. Raised in the nearby township of Stirling-Rawdon, he maintains a strong connection to the region.

"I've been fortunate," he said. "I've met a lot of really good people that have come through the organization. You build a strong network that you become close with, trust, and can rely on when you need them."

With nearly 18 years of coaching experience, including several seasons in the OJHL and a successful stint with the Quinte Red Devils, Shearer has found the perfect profession for himself.

"I got to find my passion for the game in a different way outside of playing. It's been a rewarding experience," he said. "I enjoy the aspect of the camaraderie. It's something I love to do and take a lot of pride in."

As the Huskies pursue a Schmalz Cup, Shearer will undoubtedly continue to help shape the future of the franchise.
